jung described the archetypes of the collective unconscious as ‘spontaneous phenomena which are not subject to our will, and we are therefore justified in ascribing to them a certain autonomy.’  a mythological or archetypal complex-such as the judeo-christian apocalypse-is, from this jungian perspective, ultimately a psychic event that can take material manifestation, like a collective dream coming to life.

i really disliked this book, but there were a handful of quotes, mostly pulled from others, that i liked thinking about.  pinchbeck in general though seems like one of these ‘intellectuals’ that, aside from not even being that smart, seems to never have experienced any profound or spiritual or shattering moment in his entire life.
